Herolde – Town criers

The history of the Gallimarkt goes back more than 600 years. Leer, with its port on the Leda River, was an important trading center for the region. In 1508 the city was granted the right to hold a market, where mainly cattle but also other goods could be sold. Over the centuries, the Gallimarkt changed its face bit by bit, and since the middle of the nineteenth century it became more and more of a fair. Since 1907, the three town criers announce the opening of the Gallimarkt. Their exclamation exists only in the Frisian language. The name Gallimarkt derives from the date of death (October 16) of Saint Gall, a Christian missionary from Ireland.

Radeau, Radeau, Raditjes doe, de Stadt, de hört de König toe, Radeau, Radeau, Raditjes dum!

Town Criers opening the Gallimarkt

The original: Frisian

„Radeau, Radeau, raditjes doe,
de Stadt, de hört de König toe,
radeau, radeau raditjes dum!
De Börmester led vebeden,
dat nüms mag kopen of verkopen
bevör de Klocke negen sleit,
bi Verlüß van Goderen
un all wat over tein Pund weggt,
is na de Waage to brengen,
un darnaa dree Daag free Markt!“

English

„Hear! Hear! Hear!
The town belongs to the king
Hear! Hear! Hear!
The mayor forbids
everyone to sell or buy
before the clock strikes nine
under penalty of loss of goods,
and anything heavier than ten pounds
has to be brought to the scales
and after that three days of free market!“
