EMS Group celebrates name giving ceremony of newbuilding EMS Luna at headquarters in Leer
Just in time for the Gallimarkt fair, the ship berthed near the group’s headquarters in the city center. The versatile and efficient new coaster is part of a series of ten and has just completed its maiden voyage from Asia to Europe.
Leer, October 10, 2025 - On Thursday, the German EMS Group celebrated the name giving ceremony of the EMS Luna, the fifth of a series of up to ten newbuildings. The modern, versatile, and efficient general cargo ships are built at the KTU Shipyard in Batam, Indonesia, and are ideal for transporting bulk, breakbulk, and project cargo in European short sea traffic.
The obligatory bottle of champagne was smashed against the hull in the Port of Leer, in front of numerous international guests and in the immediate vicinity of the EMS Group headquarters. The ceremony was made even more special by the fact that the town, which has a centuries-old maritime tradition, is currently celebrating the Gallimarkt. Maritime companies based in Leer traditionally welcome guests from around the globe to this large annual fair.
Ten-year-old Fenna, the daughter of longtime EMS Group employee Heika Iwwerks, was the godmother of the EMS Luna. She wished the ship and its crew smooth sailing and always a hand's breadth of water under the keel. Mayor Claus-Peter Horst congratulated the EMS Group on the naming of the vessel and expressed his delight that the traditional yet modern maritime group strengthens Leer’s reputation as maritime hotspot in Germany.
The EMS Luna has just completed its maiden voyage from Asia to Europe. "The name giving ceremony certainly is another milestone for us, clearly illustrating that the EMS Group is continuing on its growth path," says EMS Group CEO Andreas Bergmann. "With our versatile and sustainable coasters, we are strengthening our presence in the short sea market and can provide our customers with even quicker and more flexible tailor-made transport solutions."
The EMS Group's own fleet consists of eleven modern general cargo vessels, including four new sister ships of the EMS Luna, which were launched at KTU Shipyard. The EMS Luna has a Green Star 3 Class Notation, indicating a particularly high level of environmental friendliness and sustainability.
Like all EMS ships, the EMS Luna is managed entirely by the Group's own companies. EMS Chartering is responsible for the chartering, EMS Shipmanagement for the technical management, and EMS Crewing for the seafarers aboard. All three companies are headquartered in Leer and have additional offices in Bremen, Hamburg, and Riga.
